Hi,

During these difficult times, I decided to write a feel-good book about how we can help people in need by handing out $20. Recent research shows that giving to someone helps both the recipient and the giver. Giving increases serotonin levels, dopamine levels, and oxytocin, all of which are good for us. Giving to others can lower blood pressure, increase longevity, reduce stress, and improve brain function.

Who knew?

A pocketful of $20s is a feel-good book about a nursing ED director, Lynne, who gifts $20s to five people at Christmas time. In addition to giving the $20s, she also helps them to overcome problems with abuse and work issues. She is humanistic in her approach and manages to help people out of tough situations using her medical background and contacts with the police and other health professionals.

This book would make a wonderful holiday and birthday gift for the nurse in your life! A sequel is at the publishers - it's called Three Worries.

I confess I give out five $20 bills at Christmas and sometimes during the year. Here's one story. On the last day, after a long cross-country drive, we stopped at a McDonald's for lunch on Mother's Day. I gave the woman at the window $20 and told her to keep the change. At first, she was flustered and wasn't sure what to do. I told her to put the change in her pocket. She bent toward the window and told me her children were too young to do anything for her for Mother's day. The $12.75 change would be her Mother's Day present. I came home to a refrigerator stocked with food and a bouquet from my daughter. I wished I had done more for the woman at McDonald's!

You, too, can make a difference. The nurse in the book gives you some good pointers. In the next book, Three Worries, Lynn teaches five people how to give out these $20s for the most impact.

I have been a nurse educator/researcher for many years. I have written 6 books in total and multiple professional journal articles. To review my publications, click the link below to visit me on ResearchGate
