Judith Barrington

Judith Barrington’s Lifesaving: A Memoir was the winner of the Lambda Literary Award and was a finalist for the PEN/Martha Albrand Award for the Art of the Memoir. She is the author of the best-selling Writing the Memoir: From Truth to Art, widely used in creative writing programs, and five collections of poetry, most recently, Long Love, New and Selected Poems. Her work has appeared as one of Creative Nonfiction’s “Favorite Prizewinning Essays” and been included as notable literary nonfiction in The Best American Essays. She and her partner Ruth Gundle founded and ran The Flight of the Mind, a residential summer writing workshop for women that took place for eighteen years in the foothills of Oregon’s Cascade Mountains. They were also founders of Soapstone: A Writing Retreat for Women, now Soapstone: Celebrating Women Writers. Judith was a faculty member of the University of Alaska, Anchorage MFA Program and has taught creative writing at universities and writing conferences across the US and the UK, as well as in Spain, Greece, and Mexico. She was born in Brighton, England, and lives in Portland, Oregon.
