The Industrial Revolution was a pivotal time in history that changed not only the way people lived, but the way artists perceived the world. Modern Art was their response to this change. There isn't one separate movement from the late 19th century until the advent of Pop Art in the 1960s, which marked the beginning of Contemporary Art, but several major groups formed parts of what we now call Modern Art. Beginning with Impressionism, artists such as Claude Monet, Pierre Auguste Renoir, and Edgar Degas pushed beyond the bounds that restricted art to idealized, commissioned portraits and religious or mythological themes into an impression of the artist's perceptions. Though initially not well received, these artists achieved an important breakthrough, and art lovers today can purchase modern art prints that reflect their work.

Just as the Impressionists were reacting to their changing world, each succeeding movement was a reaction to or an extension of the one before. Post Impressionist artists like Vincent Van Gogh and Paul Cezanne created individualized styles. Moving into the 20th century, Sigmund Freud's ideas about the subconscious mind brought new perspectives to the work of artists, and they continued to find unique forms of expression. Salvador Dali's work in Surrealism incorporated the ideas of Freud's dream theory. Focusing on process, Jackson Pollock further broadened concepts and definitions of art with his frenetic mid-century modern Abstract Expressionistic paintings.
