'"Yes, it's the talisman," repeated Sato, dancing with excitement', 1928, gouache, depicting a hobgoblin prancing in front of an owl, monogrammed lower right, 31 x 21 cm (12.25 x 8.25 ins), mounted, framed and glazed. Provenance: From the artist's studio and thence by descent. Original illustration for The Troubles of a Gnome by Zofja Kossak-Szczucka, translated from the Polish by Monica M. Gardner, published by A. & C. Black in 1928, this painting differs slightly from that finally published. Zofia Kossak-Szczucka (1889-1968) was a Polish writer and World War II resistance fighter who assisted Polish Jews to escape the Holocaust. In 1943 she was arrested by the Germans and sent to Auschwitz concentration camp, but survived the war. Seller Inventory # ABE-1600731827191
