Add to basketThis is a copper engraving by Carl Ferdinand Sprosse from 1853 titled "TEMPIO DI VESPASIANO in Roma" (Temple of Vespasian in Rome), depicting the ancient Roman temple ruins in the Forum Romanum with exceptional architectural detail and atmospheric perspective. The engraving shows the three surviving Corinthian columns of the Temple of Vespasian and Titus, which was built at the western end of the Roman Forum and dedicated to the deified Emperor Vespasian and his son Titus, with construction begun by Titus in 79 AD after Vespasian's death and completed by Domitian around 87 AD. Sprosse masterfully captures the monumental scale and classical proportions of these surviving columns with their ornate Corinthian capitals and entablature fragments, showing the weathered stone surfaces and the romantic overgrowth of vegetation that characterized Rome's ancient ruins during the 19th century. The composition includes the surrounding urban landscape of contemporary Rome, with multi-story residential buildings creating a striking juxtaposition between ancient imperial grandeur and modern domestic architecture, while small figures of visitors and locals provide scale and animate the scene. The engraving demonstrates Sprosse's skill in architectural documentation and his understanding of the picturesque aesthetic, showing not only the temple's fragmentary remains but also its integration into the living fabric of 19th-century Rome, complete with detailed stonework, shadow patterns, and the atmospheric effects of light filtering through the classical ruins. The print bears the inscription "C. Sprosse 1853" in the lower right corner and the full title "TEMPIO DI VESPASIANO in Roma" centered below the image, indicating this was part of his comprehensive series documenting Rome's archaeological heritage during his extended residency in the city following his arrival in 1844. The condition of this impression appears very good with sharp line definition, excellent tonal gradations, and minimal age-related discoloration, though some light foxing spots are visible in the paper margins, which is typical and acceptable for mid-19th-century copper engravings of this quality and historical significance.
