A Gouache and pencil finished illustration measuring 13 x 17.5 inches approx of 3 girls in a moorland setting probably done for a cover art for a Mary Gervaise "Pony" or "Horse" girls story book c1930-36 (judging by the hair styles and clothes). Signed lower right in his usual fashion, a few light marks and surface rubs that will probably brush or rub off, left bottom edge has a slight bump. Guaranteed genuine. Painted on art board. BIOG Details: Painter and etcher, notably of horse and genre subjects, born in Halifax (or Elland), Yorkshire. He studied at Westminster, Central, Camberwell and Bolt Court Schools after early education in Birmingham and St Leonards-on-Sea showed a talent for art. His teachers included A S Hartrick, George Clausen, Harold Gilman and Walter Bayes. For several years was an accomplished commercial artist. Whydale exhibited at RA from 1910?50, SGA, RE, RSA and Fine Art Society. Victoria & Albert Museum, Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge and South London Art Gallery hold his work. Whydale lived in Royston, Hertfordshire, from 1919. He built a studio called Fag?s Folly, where he taught and with his brother Arthur promoted amateur theatricals. He painted from a horse-drawn caravan. **Whydale's work is held in the permanent collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum, the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, and the Royston & District Museum and Art Gallery, as well as the South London Art Gallery, among others.
