Item description from seller

[Poetry][Signed] Washington the Nation Builder Broadside on white watermarked paper measures 14 x 8 1/2 inches. Small chips to two corners plus 3/8-inch closed tear along right margin. Boldly signed in ink at bottom, "Your friend, Edwin Markham Staten Island, N.Y." Verso is blank. Good condition. One of a series of Edwin Markham [1852-1940] poems printed in broadside format. This is perhaps his best known for his poem, "The Man with the Hoe". The poem was supposedly written after Markham viewed Jean-François Millet's painting of the same name and became an anthem of sorts for the labor movement. Markham served as the Poet Laureate of Oregon from 1923 to 1931.
