An original 1928 panoramic print by N.C Wyeth, one of five commissioned murals he did for the Society to hang in their Washington, DC headquarters. The print portrays a troop of 15th or 16th century explorers atop a tropical hill in the New World, looking out over the vast expanse to be conquered. Text underneath reads - "Urged ever onward by the Quest of the Unknown, the Dauntless Leader, symbolic of Man?s age-old struggle to Master the Earth, has Braved the Sea, Conquered the Desert, Pierced the Jungle, Scaled the Mount. At last his tired eyes behold the Goal of his Dream. It is his gift to World Knowledge. ?This is the central canvas in a notable series of five great murals ? The Romance of Discovery, by the internationally famous artist, N. C. Wyeth ? recently completed for the National Geographic Society headquarters in Washington." Original fold lines.
