It's Alternations of conflict and adventure with indolence and revelry, of rigid discipline and of lawless unrestraint, together with the chances of fortune and of advancement which it holds out-these characteristics of war have ever made the profession of arms peculiarly attractive to certain classes of men. The camaraderie, whose free jollity the artist permits us to witness, are fairly representative of the diverse characters whom war attracts. The young fellow with his foot on the bench, and he who sits next him and is just now emitting from his mouth a cloud of tobacco smoke, are rakish Lotharios, typical of the roysterers who were so numerous among the followers of the English Charleses, who despised equally the politics and the morals of the Puri- The two men in the middle background, sitting in partial shadow, look like freebooters who would shrink from no excess of cruelty or vice. The two elderly men standing in the right foreground represent a better element; these men have either sown their wild oats, or, possibly, they have from the first followed arms for some serious and worthy ends. Though not unsympathetic with the jollity of the occasion, they maintain a dignified reserve. The company is sufficiently heterogeneous in its make-up to suggest the possibility that it is a fragment of the army that Wallenstein gathered from all quarters of the continent. But who is the convivial old abbot? Has his relation of "comrade" always been a spiritual one? or was he formerly of the same calling as his fellow-convives? In the latter case he may now be rehearsing some piquant incident of his former life. Be that as it may, he has something to say that vastly entertains his guests, and which, we may add, equally scandalizes the two monks in the background, one of whom looks daggers, while the other clasps his hands in holy horror. The picture has a rare charm of chiaroscuro; the artist having effectively focussed the light upon the white table-cover, whence it radiates till it almost loses itself in the shadows of the vaulted chamber. The noble massiveness of the architectural setting, and especially the fine stone tracery on the left, are to be noted. The varied costumes and table accessories have afforded an excellent occasion for the exercise of the artist's gift of color. J. E. Gaisser was born at Augsburg in 1825. After preliminary studies in that city under J. Geyer, he entered the Academy of Munich, where he had as masters, successively, Gärtner, Zimmermann and Schnorr.
