About this Item
Lithograph, in acid free Mylar envelope, from issue 230 (2 April 1935) which consisted for four pages of text and two caricatures. This is one of them. It depicts a satirical scene of a judge wielding a stick "the indictment" after hitting the rocky mountain, on the wall of which appear the words "Press Freedom." It uses the Biblical theme of Moses hitting the rock to get water to flow from it for the Israelites. At the summit of the cliff are flags representing the Republican newspaper of the July Monarchy (The "National", the "Tribune", "Charivari", "La Caricature"). This mountain or rock has a waterfall of money that a motley crowd is quick to collect. This cartoon is about the government crackdown against the press, leading to the Act of September 1835. Between July 1830 to September 1834, there were 520 lawsuits against the press, substantial prison sentences against journalists and heavy fines. At the bottom right of the lithograph, "lith Delaunois." Delaunois was Lithographer Printer who worked at Charivari, a weekly Republican satirical journal founded by Charles Philippon. It ran between November 4, 1830 and 1835 and the the Act of September dealt it a fatal blow. It was published every Thursday with 4 pages of text and one or two lithographs. The journal was sued, journalists put on trial and found guilty, many times. See article on "La Caricature" in the Larousse, Dic. Univ. nineteenth century, t. 3. : "lith. Delaunois" Delaunois: Imprimeur lithographe. A collaboré au Charivari.
