About this Item

Description:

This originally hand-colored map is from Isaac Tirion's "Nieuwe en beknopte Hand-Atlas, bestaande in eene Verzameling van eenige der algemeenste en noodigste Landkaarten". The work was published in Amsterdam by Tirion between 1759 and 1784 (though printed title reads 1744). --- Isaak Tirion (1705-1765) was a Dutch publisher. His maps often used the cartography of De L'Isle for reference. Tirion "was more of a bookseller and publisher than a geographer or cartographer. But he must have done very well by the cartographer under his employ as his maps excel in style and exactness." (Koeman p. 126) --- The work is in very good to excellent condition. There may be a few minor imperfections or faint fox marks to be expected with age. There may be some faint offset or wear to the edges or fold. Please review the image carefully for condition and contact us with any questions. --- Paper Size ~ 21 1/2" by 17 1/4" (Fold Out). Seller Inventory # tirion087

TitlEast Indies map ? Java, Sumatra, Borneo & Malay Peninsula, c.1755 Attractive 18th-century map of the East Indies centered on Borneo and the Malay world, showing Sumatra, Java, the Malay Peninsula, Celebes (Sulawesi) and adjoining seas threaded with rhumb lines from a bold eight-point compass rose. Engraved by the noted Dutch draughtsman Jakob (J.) van der Schley for the Dutch edition of Antoine-François Prévost's celebrated travel compendium, Histoire générale des voyages (Algemeene Geschiedenis der Reizen). The bilingual cartouche?French and Dutch?reflects the plate's origin for a Dutch readership fascinated by VOC trade routes and the spice islands in the mid-18th century. Coastal place-names are richly distributed: Malacca and the Straits, Bantam and Batavia on Java, the Sunda Strait, Banka and Billiton, Macassar, the Natuna and Anambas groups, Mindoro and the Calamianes at upper right, and part of New Guinea and the Moluccas to the east. Soundings, shoals, banks and anchorages pepper the seas, underlining the chart's practical nautical flavor. An equatorial line bisects Borneo, and neat engraved borders with degree scales frame the image. Van der Schley?trained by Bernard Picart?brought a crisp, elegant line to the Dutch Prévost plates; here it's complemented by fine contemporary hand color that differentiates islands and coastlines with pleasing clarity. Beyond its decorative appeal, the sheet encapsulates the geography and commerce of the VOC sphere in the decades before Cook and Raffles, when Batavia was the hub of a far-reaching maritime empire. This is a strong, well-inked impression with the typical vertical fold from issue?ideal for collectors of Southeast Asia, VOC cartography, or the Prévost series. Condition: Good, with general age toning. Image slightly trimmed; minor handling wear and a few small spots. Original vertical fold as issued; blank verso. Visible platemark. Framing tips: A warm ivory or pale cream conservation mat will set off the hand color; a dark wood or ebonized frame lends gravitas, while a narrow gilt slip adds a period accent. Float-mounting to show the platemark is recommended. Technique: Hand-colored copper engraving Maker: Jakob van der Schley, Amsterdam, c.1755. Seller Inventory # PCT-281

Title: "Antique Map of the Sunda Islands Including Sumatra, Java, and Borneo" This print is a beautifully detailed and relatively rare map of Western Indonesia, encompassing the region historically known as the Sunda Islands. Created by the cartographer Nicolas Sanson and published in 1705, it measures approximately 9.8 x 7.6 inches (24.9 x 19.3 cm). The map features hand-applied coloring, enhancing its visual appeal and highlighting the distinctive geographical features of the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Java, and Borneo, among others. The map is noteworthy for its precision and the abundance of place names, such as Sincapura (Singapore), Bali, Flores, and others, which are meticulously noted. A striking feature of this map is its ornate title cartouche, adorned with a garland of fruit, which adds an artistic element to the scientific endeavor of cartography. Nicolas Sanson's small maps, originally from his work "L'Asie en Plusieurs Cartes." first published in 1652 and engraved by A. Peyrounin, were popular and influential enough to be replicated by various publishers. Johann David Zunners included copies of Sanson's maps in his German translation of "Die Gantze Erd-Kugel" in 1679. Johannes Ribbius and Simon de Vries also published copies in 1682 and 1683, introducing new maps engraved by Antoine d'Winter. The engraving plates changed hands over time, eventually being acquired by Francois Halma, who utilized them in 1699 and later in 1705, with the titles being re-engraved in Dutch. These same plates saw further use, with titles re-engraved back into French for use by Nicholas Chemereau in 1715 and Henri du Sauzet in 1738. This map, originating from "Algemeene Weereld-Beschryving," represents a significant period in cartographic history, illustrating the era's geographical knowledge and artistic flair. The intricate detailing and the charming coloration of the map make it not only an important historical document but also a piece of art. Seller Inventory # BG-13724
