Superb engraving of an adult Magnificent bird-of-Paradise. The most distinguishing characteristic, the two long, wire-like tail feathers that the male uses in the courtship display grow between three and six years after hatching. Males cannot display to find a mate until these feathers grow. Modern common name Magificent bird-of-paradise Modern binomial name Cicinnurus magnificus Distribution Found on the island of New Guinea as well as the nearby islands groups of the Aru Islands, D'Entrecasteaux Islands and West Papua Islands.
