About this Item
The given Chromolithographic Illustration is a poignant and detailed print from "Pilgrim's Progress and other works by John Bunyan," published circa 1870 by James Sangster. The illustration depicts Jesus Christ bearing the cross, a pivotal moment in Christian iconography representing his journey to crucifixion. Christ is portrayed with a serene yet resolute expression, wearing a red robe and a crown of thorns, with a halo encircling his head, signifying his divine nature. The cross he carries is prominently displayed, emphasizing the burden and sacrifice he undertakes for humanity. The background features a tranquil landscape with a body of water and distant hills, providing a calm contrast to the solemn scene. The phrase "Bearing the Cross" is inscribed at the bottom of the print, underscoring the central theme of Christ's suffering and redemption. The imprint "Leighton Bros." indicates the lithographers who produced this high-quality chromolithograph, known for their detailed and colorful prints. John Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress" is a celebrated Christian allegory, and this illustration likely accompanies a section of the text that highlights themes of sacrifice, faith, and the journey of the soul. The process was based on lithography printing on stone, but extended so that a separate stone, each with its own color, was laid on top of the previous one. Thus, the paper sheet was printed on several times before the print was finished. This required both a number of stones and a very precise method for laying the stones.
