AMERICAN ARTIST DENNIS NOLAN FAMILY DOG POSTER No 72-1 1st PRINT WITH POSTCARD, AVALON BALLROOM. Poster approx. 14" x 20" with Postcard mailer. With portrait of Janis Joplin and her band Big Brother and the Holding Company was printed from the pencil art of Dennis Nolan. Center portrait of guitarist James Gurley and a young family member. Additional acts listed include blues rockers Canned Heat, plus Mother Earth and Mount Rushmore. Nolan, who taught for 30 years and was known by many of his students as the Wizard, had a long and diverse career. Born in 1945 in San Francisco, he studied painting and art history at San Jose State University, and began by illustrating posters for such locally based bands as The Grateful Dead and Big Brother and the Holding Company. The poster art created by Artist Dennis Nolan to promote 1960s and 70s live music concerts, club dates and legendary events is among the most collectible rock poster art of the period.…The Family Dog was managed by Promoter Chet Helms, who began commissioning posters to advertise Avalon concerts beginning in 1966. The posters, with their psychedelic graphic and colors, hippie-culture references, and highly decorative lettering, grew so popular that they were soon produced and sold for profit. Wes Wilson, Stanley "Mouse" Miller, Alton Kelley and Victor Moscoso were four early pioneers who set the creative direction for American posters. Rick Griffin came along at the end of 1966 (from Southern California and Surfer magazine) and brought his own flair to poster design, fitting in seamlessly with the first four. By 1967, Griffin had joined the pioneers and they were known collectively as "the Big Five." In the fall of 1967, Griffin produced a Family Dog poster, (FD-89), for an October concert featuring Quicksilver Messenger Services, Sons of Champlin, and Taj Mahal & the Blue Flames. The poster was unlike any that had been created before it, with its "Sunday Funnies" layout, panels of surreal cartoons and talk balloons with mostly nonsensical, abstract lettering.
