About this Item
Fredric Brown Original Photo Hand-Colored & -Signed ONE-OF-A-KIND, Framed, 1948. This original hand-colored photograph captures Fredric Brown dressed as a citizen of "Io of Mars," green skin and upright horns, pointed orange ears and all. This image was the prototype for the black and white dust jacket back cover of Brown's classic, What Mad Universe (E. P. Dutton Co. Inc., 1949, NYC), one of the greatest science fiction novels of the 20th century. This ONE-OF-A-KIND photo is hand-signed by Brown: "To My Agent on Terra, Harry Altshuler / Nworb Derf / Io, Mars, 3-4-48." --Nworb Derf being Fred Brown. The novel--a fine satire of 1940s-era American pulp magazines, incorporating the several SciFi stereotypes woven into a coherent alternate universe--is full of the joyful humor for which Brown is known. This unusual image was taken by James Davey of Milwaukee WI. Brown's other notable titles include Martians Go Home, and many mystery titles including The Bloody Moonlight, Fabulous Clipjoint, and Here Comes a Candle, among others. If you've never read him before, you're missing out on a cyclone ride of joy, mystery, imagination, fantasy, and of course good story telling. The double-matted photo measures 4.5 x 7 inches; the silver metal frame is 17 x 14 inches. IMPORTANT NOTE: Brown wrote the shortest SciFi story of all time, "The last man on Earth is sitting in his easy-chair and there's a knock at the door." WOW! Dust jacket is **not for sale**; shown for illustration only. Seller Inventory # 081324
