Add to basketPlate 6: 'Oiseau Mouche, Sapho.' (Saphire mouthed hummingbird.) Flanked by tea roses. Original hand coloured engraving and stipple engraving on vellin type paper. Description: This delicate plate originates from an unknown work or series of plates. We have not been able to find any reference anywhere. As the collection this originates from also contains proof prints, we assume this plate to be extremely scarse and probably a workshop item, never bound. The Pauquet brothers did engrave birds in the more encyclopedic but rare works: Histoire Naturelle des Oiseaux d'Europe. (not dated c. 1830) and Histoire Naturelle des Oiseaux Exotiques., by C.L. Lemaire and Florent Prevost, first publ. 1836. On our plates bird and other species are combined with plants and appear to be designed for decorative rather than ornithological purpose. Age estimate: 1830.Artists and Engravers: Engravers Hippolyte Louis Em. Pauquet (born 1797) and Polydore Pauquet (ca 1800 - 1860). The freres Pauquet, were reknowned 19th-century illustrators of a number of very popular and nowdays expensive works. Condition: Image good. General age related toning and light staining. Some remains of pen / pencil drawing/writing on front and rear, which has been practically removed. Please study scan carefully. Storage location: C160-17 The overall size is ca. 10.6 x 7.9 inch. The image size is ca. 8.1 x 5.3 inch. The overall size is ca. 27 x 20 cm. The image size is ca. 20.5 x 13.5 cm.
