About this Item
Amsterdam: Pieter MORTIER, ca. 1704. Double-page engraved view (21 ½" x 25") of the VILLA FARNESE in the province of Viterbo. From the second volume ("Civitates Status Ecclesiastici") of Mortier's "Nouveau Theatre d'Italie" as plate XXI (VAN DER KROGT 43:221/3). Full margins; later hand color. The design goes back to Joan Blaeu: "Pieter Mortier reissued all the Blaeu maps of the Italian town atlas in an atlas comprising four volumes. He amended and retouched several of the Blaeu maps, put his name on nearly all of them and added engraved numbers" (ibid.). The pentagonal Villa Farnese or Villa Caprarola was initially conceived as a fortified castle by architects Baldassare Peruzzi and Antonio da Sangallo. It was only transformed into a Late Renaissance-style villa in 1559 when Giacomo da Vignola, commissioned by Cardinal Alessandro Farnese, changed the earlier plans. Seller Inventory # 6BD0050
