Copper plate prints published March, 1773. Both plates engraved by L. D. Plate I measures 10cm x 15cm (not including plate mark); plate II measures 10.75cm x 15.5cm (not including plate mark) - over all with text 23cm x 33cm. Both prepared for for Grose's Antiquities of England and Wales from a views drawn by Grose in 1761. Notes: The palace was destroyed in 1644 after the English Civil War, having been held for the King. After the Restoration in 1660, ownership of the ruins was returned to the bishops. In 1869 the Ecclesiastical Commissioners took over the site and sold it in 1889. The last owner, Viscount Cunningam, passed the ruins into the guardianship of the Office of Works in 1952. They are now looked after by English Heritage.
