Add to basketPlate: 'Le Diable de Papefiguiere'. (The Devil of Papefiguiere.) Original copperplate engraving and stipple engraving and etching combination printed with sepia ink on japanese paper. Description: This very rare attractive original old antique print / plate originates from an uncut and unbound proof edition of: 'Suite des cents estampes pour illustrer les Contes et Nouvelles en vers par J. de la Fontaine.', published in Paris by J. Lemonnyer in 1882. This was a re-issue which contains a suite of engravings from the 1795 edition, suplemented with new etchings by Martial after the 1795 edition. This particular print is from a Japan proof edition-de-luxe with the etchings in two states (plain and bistre) on paper imported from the Imperial Factory of Japan, printed in only 100 copies to subscribers. Total cost at the time was 500 francs.Artists and Engravers: The engravings / etchings in this work are after the erotic and spirited designs of the famous French artist Jean-Honere Fragonard (1732-1806) as illustrations for the famous stories by Jean de la Fontaine. This plate engraved by Adolphe Theodore Jules Martial Potemont(1828-1883). This prolific French etcher exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1846-1882. He was a student of Felix Briscot de Warville and Leon Cogniet. Condition: Excellent. General age related toning and light foxing. Paper uncut. Storage location: A157-33 The overall size is ca. 9.6 x 12.6 inch. The image size is ca. 5.7 x 8.7 inch. The overall size is ca. 24.5 x 32 cm. The image size is ca. 14.5 x 22 cm.
