Antique print, titled: 'Descendit ad inferna [.].' - Christ'descent in limbo. Christ in Limbo, delivering the patriarchs / ancestors. This edition was printed around 1700, based on the watermark by the Publisher Nicolaes Visscher II (1649-1702). The set is usually published as "Groote Figuer-bijbel"or "Theatrum Biblicum". The Visscher family published these already antique plates from 1649 on. State: Third state of 3 Ref: NH 729 Theatrum Biblicum Engraving on Laid paper. Made by 'Adriaen Collaert' after 'Maerten de Vos'. Adriaen Collaert (ca.1560 1618) was a Flemish designer and engraver. He was the son of Jan Collaert I and Anna van der Heijden. He married Justa Galle, the daughter of the man he worked for, Philip Galle. Maarten de Vos (1532-1603) was an Antwerp painter and draughtsman of the late sixteenth century. His travels to Italy made him adopt the Mannerist style. His designs were very popular and were followed widely. Very good, given age. Large margins. Some foxing.
