Antique print, titled: 'Polus.' - Portrait of Polus, c. 5th century BCE, was an Ancient Greek Athenian philosophical figure best remembered for his depiction in the writing of Plato. He was a pupil of the famous orator Gorgias, and teacher of oratory from the city of Acragas, Sicily. Engraving on hand laid paper. Description: Source unknown, to be determined. Provenance: L.A. Pieter Stevensz. van Gunst (ca. 1659-1731), also known as Petrus Stephani, was a Dutch draughtsman, engraver and print publisher, active in Amsterdam, in London in 1704 and in Nederhorst in 1730-1731. Many Museums hold his work. Adriaen van der Werff 1659 1722 was an accomplished Dutch painter of portraits and erotic, devotional and mythological scenes. His brother, Pieter van der Werff 1661 1722, was his principal pupil and assistant. Condition: Good, given age. Pper edges a bit irregular. Short margins. Light creasing.
