Copperplate engraving and etching combination on a verge type hand laid paper. on paper. Size in cm: The overall size is ca. 52 x 39.5 cm. The image size is ca. 40.5 x 39 cm. Size in inch: The overall size is ca. 20.5 x 15.6 inch. The image size is ca. 15.9 x 15.4 inch.Plate titled : 'De wiskonstenaars of het gevluchte juffertje. - Les philosophes ou la fille echappee.' (The mathematicians or the escaped young lady.) This plate shows mathematicians - scientists - astrologists working with food objects to explain a celestial theory to a group of wealthy citizen's. With portraits of copernicus and ptolomeus hanging on the wall. The young lady enters the room. A dog and cat are watching. This plate was originally published as part of: 'Tafereelen uit het burgelijke leven van de Hollanders in de achttiende eeuw door Cornelis Troost.', (Transl.: Scenes from the daily life of the citizens of Holland in the 18th c. by Cornelis Troost.), published by E. Maaskamp, Amsterdam, 1811. This magnificent and very scarse series of 32 scenes show satiric views in Holland, part of present day The Netherlands. This plate individually published by P. Fouquet Jr., Amstersdam c. 1811.Artists and Engravers: This plate by P. Tanje after Cornelis Troost. The original painting belonged to the collection of Jan Jacob de Bruyn.Condition: Excellent. General age related toning and light staining. Paper a bit damaged at some very small spots. Sheet cut within plate marks, but outside image.
