Original butterfly and moth print, titled: Erycinidae: 1. 2. 3. Hades Hecamede, 4. Uraneis Ucubis, 5. Imelda Glaucosmia, 6. Lucilla Camissa, 7. 8. Pandemos Palaeste . The modern identifiers of these insects are: Hades hecamede, Thisbe ucubis (Ucubis Metalmark), Imelda mycea, Lucillella carnissa & Synargis palaeste (Palaeste Metalmark). Usually both male and female specimen are depicted on the plate. Crayon style lithograph with original hand colouring, heightened with arabic gum, on a vellin type paper. Description: This attractive coloured print originates from William C. Hewitson's 'Illustrations of New Species of Exotic Butterflies', (London: 1851-1866). A work which is very seldom found complete, as it was published in 100 parts (with 300 plates) during a period of 25 years. Horn & Schenkling 10288 only list the first 3 volumes. Only 35 copies of this rare work were subscribed. Artists and Engravers: William Chapman Hewitson (Newcastle-upon-Tyne 1806 - Oatlands 1878) was a British naturalist. He was particularly devoted to Coleoptera and Lepidoptera and bird's nests and eggs. He maintained one of the largest collections of butterflies of his time, purchased and gathered from all over the world. His illustrations are held in very high regard. The beautiful attractive plates are all after the authors own drawings and lithographed by Hullmandel. Hewitson was a very skilled artist and particularly well known for his plates in 'The Genera of Diurnal Lepidoptera' by E. Doubleday and J.O. Westwood. Condition: Very good, given age.
