About this Item
We offer an original signed lithograph by Raphael Soyer. The composition is 23 ¾ x 16 on thick wove paper that measures 29 ¼ x 20 ¼ . The print is editioned and signed in graphite along the lower margin just under the image: A. P.[artist proof] Raphael Soyer with the Circle Gallery blindstamp at the lower corner margin. 8th Avenue is a sympathetic portrait of three sex workers. The women are rendered with confident, hurried crosshatching in a muted, earth toned palate. There is none of the lady of the night garish figuration typical of other male artists of his genre who drew on the same subject matter. The word peep barely visible in the window of the establishment behind them. The women stand in a close circle facing outwards. They have the look of poetic detachment that Soyer conjured in much of his art depicting working class women of all kinds. Raphael Soyer was a Russian born American painter and printmaker whose portraits of New York City residents, typically women, are identified with the Social Realist movement. He had two brothers who were also artists: Moses and Isaac. His work is in numerous museums including: The Museum of Modern Art, The Corcoran Gallery of Art, Fogg Art Museum, The Phillips Collection, The New York Public Library, and The Tel Aviv Museum. Condition: There is a pin hole at both upper corners of the blank margin, likely from the proof process, otherwise very good condition. Seller Inventory # PR00313
