About this Item
We offer a pencil signed 19" x 19" lithograph by John Altoon from the About Women series. Printed on Rives BFK paper, signed and editioned at the lower right near the Gemini Ltd blind stamp, Artist s Proof III. In 1966 Altoon collaborated with the poet Robert Creeley and Gemini Ltd. on an artist s book called About Women. Altoon lived next door to the Gemini workshop founded by master printer Ken Tyler, and the two worked together happily. The resulting portfolio consisted of 10 prints by Altoon interspersed with three poems by Creeley. These visionaries of the the abstract and the avant garde had a distinctive vocabulary of forms and verse that were precise, yet relaxed. From 1947 1949 he attended the Otis Art Institute, from 1947 to 1950 he also attended the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles, and in 1950 the Chouinard Art Institute. Altoon was a prominent figure in the LA art scene in the 1950s and 1960s. Exhibitions of his work have been held at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, Corcoran Gallery, Washington D.C, Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, The Baxter Museum, Pasadena, and The Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
