About this Item
I fell in love with Julius Klinger when I first found a portfolio of his works at auction in New York a few years ago. His purity of design is unequaled, and his outlook on life, posters, and poster design is something that I relate(d) to instantly. Das Weib (The Woman) is one of two design portfolios created by Klinger and his partner Hans Anker. Printed in Paris by the Library de L'Art Ancient et Moderne and clearly inspired by Klinger's fascination with Aubrey Beardsley, books like this one, lavishly illustrated and vividly colored, were popular in France, Italy, Belgium and Switzerland in the early 20th century. Intended to inspire interior decorators and designers, patterns included ideas for clothing, room design, carpets, wallpaper, and book covers. Das Weib is also an important document that helps define and illustrate the changing dynamics of gender in Europe in the early 1900s: the New Woman was shown in all her glory - clothed, nude, at play, at work, with children or alone. A full portfolio, plates in excellent condition, cover slightly frayed. A rare find from a private collection. This book measure 13 x 15 inches. Seller Inventory # KBE0143
