Add to basketThis remarkable 1834 copperplate engraving of "Russia in Europe" from Conrad Malte-Brun's System of Geography, published by Samuel Walker in Boston, presents an extraordinarily detailed cartographic representation of the vast Russian Empire's European territories during the reign of Tsar Nicholas I, covering Russia from the Arctic Ocean to Turkey and from Sweden to Tartary, created just a few years after the 1825 Decembrist revolt when Russian army officers protested against Nicholas I's ascension to the throne. The map extends from the Baltic Sea and Gulf of Finland in the west to the Ural Mountains in the east, encompassing the enormous expanse of European Russia with meticulous attention to political divisions, major cities, river systems including the Volga, Dnieper, and Don rivers, mountain ranges depicted through sophisticated cross-hatching techniques, and countless settlements and administrative regions labeled in precise, small-scale engraving typical of early 19th-century cartographic excellence. The northern regions show Lapland and the Arctic coastline, while the southern boundaries extend to the Black Sea, Caspian Sea, and the frontiers with the Ottoman Empire and Persia, reflecting the geopolitical situation following the Napoleonic Wars and the Congress of Vienna that established the post-war balance of power in Europe. Longitude markings "East from Greenwich" appear at the top with degree measurements from 20° to 70°, while latitude lines create a precise grid system, and "Boston: Published by Samuel Walker" is clearly inscribed at the bottom, confirming this as part of the American educational edition of Malte-Brun's comprehensive geographical work that served as a standard reference for American students studying world geography. The visual quality of this copperplate engraving is exceptional, demonstrating crisp, clean lines with minimal foxing or age-related damage, sophisticated topographical representation through varied engraving techniques, excellent contrast preservation that allows for easy reading of the extensive place names, and the characteristic precision and artistic skill that made Samuel Walker's Boston publishing house renowned for producing superior geographical and educational materials for the American market during the early 19th century. From the American edition, published by S. Walker, of System of Geography by M. Malte-Brun containing a description of all the empires, kingdoms, states and provinces in the known world. M.
