About this Item
We offer an early engraving of Charles Lee from Geschichte der Kriege in und ausser Europa [History of Wars in and out of Europe] by Christoph Heinrich Korn. The plate is 6 ½ x 4 on laid paper 8 x 6 ½ . Lee looks off to the left in a naturalistic pose, in this half-length portrait framed in an oval architectural detail and with the title in German below; Charles Lee Esqr Amercanisscher General Major. This title contains an error, confusing the lawyer Charles Lee (who became U.S. Attorney General) with the career military officer. Charles Lee (1732 1782) was an officer in the British army from 1744 until taking up residency in America and joining the Continental Army. He was dismissed from the army in 1780 and died two years later. The paper retains a portion of a bishop watermark that resembles similar marks from paper makers in Germany in the early half of the 18th century. Condition: The paper has several light creases and there are two small pieces of adhesive tape on verso. Overall the engraving is in good untouched condition with wide margins.
