Add to basketAh, the 1970s?an era when disco balls twinkled like the hopes and dreams of baby boomers, and the only thing more vibrant than polyester suits was the social commentary lurking between the covers of a book. Enter "Since Yesterday" by the illustrious Frederick Lewis Allen, a tome that promises to distill the essence of yesteryear while you, dear reader, sip your lukewarm tea and adjust your horn-rimmed glasses. Originally brought to you by the ever-enigmatic Perennial Library, this book is a delight for those who relish a time when men wore hats and women wore. well, whatever they were told to. Forget the digital age; this is a nostalgic postcard from a simpler time when people wrote letters instead of tweets. Frederick Lewis Allen, a name that surely rang bells in the literary salons of yore, had a knack for capturing the zeitgeist of America. In "Since Yesterday," he uses his pen to navigate the murky waters of a nation suspended between the clutches of two World Wars and the dawning of the tumultuous 1970s. What could possibly go wrong? With chapter titles that read like your grandmother?s bingo card, expect a rollercoaster of historical anecdotes, societal musings, and a few paragraphs that may or may not reference the state of the hedgerows. Now, one wouldn?t be remiss to imagine that this book serves as a window into a world where every morning began with a fresh pot of coffee and the newspaper was delivered by a boy on a bicycle?possibly whilst listening to the dulcet tones of a scratchy radio. Allen reminds us that history is not just a series of dates and events but a whimsical tapestry woven from the threads of human experience. As you flip through the pages, you might find yourself giggling at the absurdity of past political debates, wondering how many Twitter accounts they would have had, had they only known. As you embark on this literary journey, prepare yourself for a delightful cocktail of prose that is as refreshing as a flat soda. Allen?s style is punctuated with an ironic wit that might just make you question the very fabric of your own existence. Why did they wear those hats? What were they thinking during the Great Depression? And why, oh why, did anyone think bell bottoms were a good idea? You could practically hear him chuckling from beyond the grave. But let?s not forget the finer details: the book is **used**, which means it carries the fragrance of nostalgia and perhaps a few coffee stains from its previous owners. Condition: Expect dog-eared pages that have surely witnessed more than a few heated discussions over the merits of milk in tea. The spine is a bit cracked, reminiscent of the society it portrays. And if you squint really hard, you might even see the ghost of a previous reader who fell asleep mid-chapter and left their bookmark in place. The ISBN? Well, that just wouldn?t do; what?s a book without a touch of delightful ambiguity? The real charm of this book lies in its ability to serve as both a conversation starter and an ender. Impress your friends at your next gathering by quoting Allen?s observations on 1930s fashion while they desperately try to keep up with the latest TikTok trends. Or simply sit back and enjoy the bewildered looks on their faces as they ponder how such an ancient relic ended up in your possession. It?s the perfect antidote for those who feel the weight of modernity pressing down like a poorly fitted suit. So, why not take a break from your current obsession with the latest bestseller and instead grab this historical treat? You never know; you might even find yourself yearning for simpler times?when people exchanged ideas over dinner instead of hashtags. Remember, dear bibliophile, at Crappy Old Books, we believe in celebrating the forgotten corners of literary history, one quirky find at a time.
