For sixty years, the richest empire on earth paid its enemies to stay away.
In the winter of 200 BC, the founding emperor of the Han dynasty marched north with the largest army in the world to settle the nomad problem - and spent seven days surrounded on a frozen hilltop by cavalry he could not catch and could not beat. He escaped by bribery. For the next six decades, China sent silk, grain, wine, and imperial princesses north to a steppe confederacy called the Xiongnu, under a treaty that called the payments gifts between kinsmen. They were tribute, and everyone on both sides knew it.
The Xiongnu are the reason China has a Great Wall. The walls the First Emperor connected were built against them, and the Han later drove those walls deep into the western deserts for one specific purpose: to cut the Xiongnu off from their allies. When an emperor finally chose to fight instead of pay, he sent a diplomat west to find partners for the war. The man came back thirteen years later - ten of them spent as a Xiongnu prisoner - carrying the first Chinese account of the lands beyond the desert. The route that opened in his wake is the one we call the Silk Road.
Drawing on the great Han histories and on the archaeology of Mongolia's excavated tombs - which contradicts the Chinese picture of simple nomads in ways worth waiting for - this is the story of the first steppe empire, told as an empire rather than as somebody else's frontier problem.
What you'll learn:
- How Modu Chanyu built the first steppe state out of tribes that had never had one - starting with a whistling arrow and a patricide
- Why the Great Wall was never a barrier: it was one visible piece of a system of garrisons, beacon towers, and military farms aimed at a single enemy
- The real economics of heqin, the treaty that dressed tribute up as a marriage
- How Zhang Qian's thirteen-year mission accidentally opened the Silk Road
- What Emperor Wu's century of war actually cost - strategic victory, fiscal catastrophe
- What the tombs and walled sites of Mongolia reveal that the Chinese histories never mention
- Where the Xiongnu went - and the honest evidence for and against the idea that they became Attila's Huns
This book is for you if:
- You have seen the Great Wall and want to know who it was actually built against
- You want the origin story of the Silk Road - a war, not a caravan
- You like history that names its sources and tells you what they could and could not have known
- You are curious how a people with no cities and no writing made the most sophisticated state on earth pay for peace
The wall was not a barrier. It was a policy. This is the enemy it was aimed at.
