This is an early collection of "The Writings of GEORGE WASHINGTON" by Jared Sparks. 1839; Ferdinand Andrews; Boston. This collection contains 11 volumes of a 12 volume set (volume 2 is not included). The volumes are leather-bound and contain numerous illustrations and maps. There is a decorative gilt design along the outer edges of the covers. "Being His Correspondence, Addresses, Messages, and Other Papers, Official and Private, Selected and Published from the Original Manuscripts." With a Life of the Author and Notes. NOTE: the primary condition issue with the collection is with the front covers (see condition description).otherwise, the volumes are mostly clean on the inside with only some occasional mild foxing found; for the most part, the pages are clean, crisp and white. Each front cover has a 1" x 1/2" rectangular patch at the top-left corner where the top layer of the leather has peeled (as if a label had been affixed, then removed resulting in the top layer peeling away). Volumes XIII and IX are missing the title label on the spine. Some of the boards have worn corners. The contents are arranged as follows: VOLUME I: Life of Washington Part Second - Correspondence and Miscellaneous Papers Relating to the American Revolution VOLUME III: Correspondence from June, 1775 to July, 1776 VOLUME IV: Correspondence from July, 1776 to July, 1777 VOLUME V: Correspondence from July, 1777 to July, 1778 VOLUME VI: Correspondence from July, 1778 to March, 1780 VOLUME VII: Correspondence from March, 1780 to April, 1781 VOLULME VIII: Correspondence from April, 1781 to December, 1783 Part Third - Private Letters from the Time Washington Resigned His Commission as Commander-in-Chief of the Army to That of His Inauguration as President of the United States VOLUME IX: Correspondence from December, 1783 to April, 1789 Part Fourth - Letters Official and Private, from the Beginning of His Presidency to the End of His Life VOLUME X: Correspondence from May, 1789 to November, 1794 VOLUME XI: Correspondence from November, 1794 to December, 1799 Part Fifth - Speeches and Messages to Congress, Proclamations, and Addresses VOLUME XII: Speeches to Congress; Messages to Congress; Proclamations; Addresses Condition: Nice interiors - mostly clean pages with mild foxing. The primary issue is with the front covers (as noted here) - VOL 1: front cover has pulled from the bottom string and is only attached by the top and middle strings. VOL 3: front cover is firmly attached and just a bit shaky; mild foxing to the pages. VOL 4: front cover is attached but has separated a bit from the spine and is shaky. VOL 5: front cover is just a bit shaky and has separated a bit at the bottom. VOL 6: front cover is attached but has pulled from the spine and is a bit shaky. VOL 7: front cover is attached, but very shaky. VOL 8: front cover is attached but has pulled from the spine and is shaky. VOL 9: front cover is attached but has separated a bit from the spine and is shaky. VOL 10: front cover is firmly attached but has pulled at the bottom and is a bit shaky.
