Navy cloth binding with lamp of knowledge embossed and blind-stamped on front, lamp of knowledge and panels gilt outlined on spine with gilt lettering; pale bluish spotting on front, otherwise clean, with light edge-wear and spine end wear. Tight and solid and square with sewn binding. Text block edges foxed. Pages clean, occasional smudges, no underlining or marking of text. Frontis: Portrait of John Lothrop Motley.
