Item description from seller

XX, 562 p. Schutzumschlag weist deutliche Gebrauchsspuren auf: angeschmutzt, mit Randläsuren und kleineren Einrissen, Vorderschnitt unregelmäßig, einige Bleistiftanstreichungen und -anmerkungen im Buch / Dust jacket shows significant signs of wear: soiled, with marginal tears and minor tears, fore edge irregular, some pencil markings and annotations in book. - Maurice Friedmans masterful anthology The Worlds of Existentialism is the first really comprehensive and critical presentation of one of the most important cultural movements of our time. It presents selections from the whole range of existentialist writings, including much material never before available in English. It organizes its chapters not according to separate thinkers, as have all previous anthologies, but according to central issues among the existentialists, including, wherever possible, the criticisms one thinker has made of another. It shows the existentialist strains in forerunners from Heracleitus to Dostoevsky; it shows the common emphasis on the dynamic, the concrete, personal involvement and commitment that unites otherwise disparate philosophies of existentialism; and it shows the differing attitudes among them. It makes clear for the first time the issue between those existentialists who see existence primarily in terms of the self and those who see the relations between selves as the fundamental reality. It discards the misleading contrast between atheist and religious existentialists in favor of a progressive shading from anti- and non-theistic humanism to theistic humanism and theism. It clarifies existential psychotherapy through a comprehensive presentation of contributions of existentialist philosophers to psychotherapy and the applications by psychotherapists of existentialist philosophies. It includes selections from such literary figures as Melville, Kafka, Rilke, and Sartre. In the Conclusion, Professor Friedman discusses such issues as Heideggers Nazism, existentialism and sex, the relation of existentialist philosophy to existentialist literature, and the analysis of existence versus pointing to the concrete. / Contents: Part I: Forerunners, Part II: Phenomenology and Ontology, Part III: The Existential Subject, Part IV: Intersubjectivity, Part V: Atheist, Humanist, and Religious Existentialism, Part VI: Existentialism and Psychotherapy, Part VII: Issues and Conclusions.
