Add to basket[1966] signed and inscribed first edition, Murray (Sydney, Australia), 7 3/8 x 9 3/4 inches tall black cloth hardcover in publisher's unclipped dust jacket, giolt lettering to spine, copiously illustrated with black-and-white photographs, drawings and charts, 175 pp. Very slight soiling, rubbing and edgewear to covers. On the title page, personally inscribed and signed by the author, noted ballerina, concert dancer, critic, choreographer and writer Beth Dean (1918-2012). Otherwise, a very good to near fine copy - clean, bright and unmarked - in a slightly edgeworn dust jacket which is nicely preserved and displayed in a clear archival Brodart sleeve. ~II~ [3.0P] As a child Beth Dean left her home at Denver, U.S.A., to study classic ballet dance in France with Leo Staats of the Paris Opera. Later, she worked with Theodore Kosloff in Los Angeles and with Nicholas Legat in London. Her performances as ballerina in legitimate theater productions, in ballet and in film and television assignments provide, with her ethnic studies, concert and lecture appearances, a wide and colorful experience. She has had a unique opportunity to know at first hand not only the sophisticated world of our theater and arts, but also the astringent simplicity of sitting on the red dust of Central Australia during night-long aboriginal initiation ceremonies. There have been tracks in New Guinea with the swimming of rain-swollen rivers, the witnessing of three-day Mani Sing Sings at mountaintop villages. There have been New Zealand sojourns among the ancient East coastal tribes and research at Rarotonga in the Cook Islands. her latest book, The Many Worlds Of Dance, is in many senses the culmination of years of intense research and experience. Here is presented a brisk, up-to-the-minute survey of many fascinating field of dance ? from the high art of Covent Garden in the Bolshoi Theater to the throbbing rituals of Australia's central desert, from the traditional intricacies of oriental dance forms to the stark force and impact of the modern creative movement. Each will hold the interest with authoritative facts, historic detail and many photographs. Everyone who is interested in dance, and those, too, who have a fringe interest and want the means to a deeper understanding, will value this book.
