The World of Sniper Rifles: The History, Engineering, and Military Evolution of the World’s Most Iconic Rifles
A single shot, fired from hundreds of meters away, can influence the course of a battle. But behind that shot lies far more than a marksman: more than a century of engineering, military experimentation, optical development, and changing battlefield requirements.
The World of Sniper Rifles traces the evolution of the military precision rifle, from the accurate rifles used by early specialist marksmen to the scoped systems of the world wars and the modular, multi-caliber platforms employed by modern armed forces.
Combining military history, technical insight, and international perspective, the book explains how the sniper rifle developed from a modified service weapon into a complete precision system.
Inside this book, you will discover:
◆ How specialist military marksmanship developed before the modern sniper rifle
◆ How the First World War established the sniper as a distinct battlefield role
◆ Why the Second World War produced some of history’s most recognizable sniper rifles
◆ The engineering behind accuracy, including actions, barrels, stocks, triggers, cartridges, and military optics
◆ Iconic systems from around the world, including the Soviet Dragunov, the American M40 and M24, European precision rifles, and heavy anti-materiel weapons
◆ How different armies created distinct doctrines and philosophies of precision fire
◆ The rise of the Designated Marksman Rifle and its relationship to the dedicated sniper system
◆ How modularity, new cartridges, and changing military requirements are shaping the next generation of precision rifles
◆ The difference between battlefield reality and the myths that have surrounded snipers in books, films, and popular culture
Written with historical rigor and presented in a clear, accessible style, the book also includes a technical glossary and selected sources for further reading.
The World of Sniper Rifles is designed for military-history readers, serious firearms enthusiasts, collectors, and anyone interested in the relationship between engineering, doctrine, and the evolution of military technology.
For readers seeking historical depth, technical detail, and a clear international overview, this book offers a grounded introduction to one of the most specialized categories of military firearms.
