American reprint of Knight?s Pictorial Edition. Thick octavo (8vo). 627 pp. Publisher?s full brown morocco, boards elaborately decorated in blind and gilt, spine with five raised bands and gilt-lettered compartments, all edges gilt. Illustrated throughout with steel-engraved plates, many retaining their tissue guards, and numerous wood engravings.
Contains Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, Cymbeline, Othello, Titus Andronicus, and King Lear. Charles Knight?s Pictorial Shakespeare was among the most extensively illustrated Shakespeare editions of the nineteenth century, combining the dramatic texts with historical, architectural, and antiquarian illustrations.
Contents generally clean and unmarked, with light, even toning; engraved plates and tissue guards well preserved. Previous owner?s signature to the front free endpaper. Binding remains sound and square. Full morocco rubbed and scuffed, with wear to the spine ends, board edges, and corners; gilt decoration and all edges remain bright. A Very Good- copy.
