London: Chapman and Hall, 1875, Vol 8 and 9 dated 1876, Third Edition. Nine Volumes, complete in half leather binding with gilt titles and lined compartments and boards. Solid, attractive bindings with the exception of volume I which is cracked to part of the front joint. All page edges gilt with marbled paper covered boards, end papers and paste downs. Extensively revised by Dyce for this edition; in his preface, he virtually disavows the first edition of 1857 in which he retained readings of a "much more doubtful character" influenced as he writes, "perhaps unconsciously, by the example of Malone and of some later editors". Approximately 8 ¾ inches (22cm) tall. Condition Report Externally Spine – good condition – gilt titles and decoration in gilt lined compartments, rubbing to the raised bands and spine ends. Joints – good condition – all very good, aside Vol I which has a partially cracked front joint. Corners – good condition – bumped and worn. Boards – good condition – some marks and scratches to the leather, marbled paper boards. Page edges – good condition – all gilt, top edges slightly darkened. See above and photos. Internally Hinges – good condition – sound and strong. Paste downs – good condition – marbled paste downs. End papers – good condition – marbled end papers.
