A charming nine volume collection of the works of William Shakespeare. William Shakespeare (1564-1616) remains one of the most influential and recognisable figures in the history of English literature, seen as the world's greatest dramatist. His work consists of thirty-nine plays, over one hundred and fifty sonnets and three long narrative poems. His plays continue to be widely studied and adapted across a plethora of forms, and consist of tragedies, such as 'Romeo and Juliet', histories, including his biographies of English Kings such as 'Richard III', and comedies, such as 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'.Edited and with a full volume glossary by Alexander Dyce (1798-1869), a Scottish literary historian and editor. He was an avid reader of Elizabethan literature, allowing him to shed light on references and allusions in Shakespeare's work that hadn't yet been understood.Volume I (1877) contains an engraved frontispiece of the author, an account of his life and his will, followed by "The Tempest", "The Two Gentlemen of Verona", "The Merry Wives of Windsor" and "Measure for Measure". Volume II contains a frontispiece of the author, "A Comedy of Errors", "Much Ado about Nothing", "Love"s Labour Lost", "A Midsummer Night"s Dream" and "The Merchant of Venice. Volume III contains a frontispiece illustration and "As You Like It", "The Taming of the Shrew", "All"s Well that Ends Well", "Twelfth Night" and "The Winter"s Tale". Volume IV contains "King John", "King Richard II", "King Henry IV" in two parts and "King Henry V". Volume V contains "King Henry VI" in three parts, "King Richard III" and "King Henry VIII". Volume VI contains "Troilus and Cressida", "Coriolanus", "Titus Andronicus", "Romeo and Juliet", "Timon of Athens" and "Julius Caesar". Volume VII contains "Macbeth", "Hamlet", "King Lear", "Othello", "Anthony and Cleopatra" and "Cymbeline". Volume VIII contains "Pericles", "The Two Noble Kinsmen", "Venus and Adonis", "Lucrece", "Sonnets", "A Lover"s Complaint", "The Passionate Pilgrim" and "The Phoenix and Turtle". Volume IX contains a glossary of uncommon words, proverbial expressions, allusions, unclear passages and detail of manners, customs and games of the era.In a wonderful full calf binding by John Bumpus.Complete in nine volumes. In a full calf binding. Externally generally smart, some rubbing to extremities and cracking to the joints, particularly volumes II, IV and volume VIII, with the front board to volume VIII nearly loose. Internally hinges a touch tender, otherwise bound firmly, pages bright and clean bar offsetting to the title page and the odd spot heavier to endpapers. Very Good Indeed.…
