Cheaply produced pocket edition, approximately 8 by 12.5cm. Complete in 9 volumes, 305, 304, 281, 309, 328, 324, 291, 308 and 288 pages respectively. Title pages with vignette portrait of Shakespeare present to all volumes, plus 4 plates with engraved illustrations, a single plate in vols 2, 7, 8 and 9, for Hamlet, Cymbeline, The Merchant of Venice and Measure for Measure. These latter from 3 other publisher's editions, so possibly a bit of extra-illustration by a later owner, or given the sense that the books were printed on whatever scrap-paper John Taylor could find, perhaps he had a handful of salvaged illustrations and salted them in as bonus material. The books are reasonably firmly bound in nineteenth century dark grey cloth, with paper title labels to the spines, looking to have been re-cased at some point, with new endpapers inserted front and rear to each volume, probably in the mid-twentieth century. The cloth is quite marked, grubby and rubbed, the extremities are bumped and the title labels are browned and chipped. The text blocks are heavily age browned, marked, stained and foxed, with small chips and closed tears to numerous page edges, cracking at points, many dog-eared corners and occasional annotations, high-lighting or corrections to the text. A provincially printed edition of Shakespeare from the turn of the nineteenth century, which re-produces Nicholas Rowe's famous 1709 biography of the Bard, including the anecdote regarding deer-stealing. Containing 36 plays arranged in the usual order of Comedies, Histories and Tragedies. Quite uncommon in commerce.…
