The Works of Jonathan Swift, D.D., and Dean of Saint Patrick's, Dublin. Containing Interesting and Valuable Papers, Not Hitherto Published. In Two Volumes. With Memoir of the Author, by Thomas Roscoe; Portrait and Autograph. London: Henry G. Bohn, York Street, Covent Garden. 1864. Hardback, half calf and marbled paper boards, with matching marbled endpapers and page edges. Raised bands, with gilt-blocked title and decoration to spine, together with dark brown leather title labels and dark red leather volume labels. Contains frontispiece of Swift, foldout facsimile handwritten document including sample of Swift's handwriting, engraved Specimens of Wood's Halfpenny, and contemporary advertisements. Octavo/8vo gatherings but more like quarto/4to in size, measures around 6 1/4" x 9 1/2" x 2". Pagination: lxxxiv, 844 pp; iv, 854. Scuffing and wear to binding with a little loss to leather at head and tail of backstrips and some tearing to head and tail of first volume backstrip. Some tearing to hinges and to corners, which are bumped and torn, and some chipping and tearing to board edges. Rubbing at edges and on hinges. Some cracking to outer hinges and the front board to the first volume is fully detached along with the front endpaper, which is itself attached to the board. Some cracking to the inner hinges but binding reasonably firm aside from the loose board. Page edges display some fading, scuffing and marking but overall the marbled detail is still quite clear and generally clean. Foxing to endpapers but otherwise page surfaces throughout very reasonably clean, only the occasional mark, with no apparent underlining, marginalia, etc. See pictures for further information.Jonathan Swift (born November 30, 1667, Dublin, Ireland—died October 19, 1745, Dublin) was an Anglo-Irish author, who was the foremost prose satirist in the English language.
