Paperback. The Works of John Dryden. Slight foxing to edge. Slight wear to edges of cover. John Dryden's poetry is in marked contrast to the exuberance wit and passion of the Metaphysica poets a generation earlier. Dryden had lived through the turbulent years of the English Civil War, and his balanced of phrase and his cultivation of the heoric couplet influenced many of the poets who followed him. Though his natural inclination to avoid extremism of any kind caused Samuel Johnson to chastise him as a professional opportunist,Dryden was a natural Poet Laureate. 606 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions ,and all types of Academic Literature).
