The two volume second edition of Christopher Smart's English language prose translation of Horace's works. The second edition, complete in two volumes. In Latin and English, printed in parallel. In these volumes, Christopher Smart translates Horace's Latin works into English prose. The work was first published in 1756 and was subsequently reprinted frequently due to its accessible nature. Early editions of this work are hard to find, as the text was very often used in schools as it was a great educational tool for those learning Latin. ESTC No. T52767 Inscription to volume I title page. Horace was a leading Augustan poet whose lyrical poems were penned in hexameter verse and the caustic iambic. In contemporary full calf bindings. Minor losses of calf to back strip head and tail. Significant rubbing to back strips. Front joint of volume II detached but present. Volume I lacking spine label. Joints starting, with boards weakly held by cords only. Inscription to front pastedown of volume II. Internally, generally firmly bound, but with one gathering of volume II working loose. Inscription to volume I title page head. Pages lightly age toned, with the odd spot and handling mark. Good Only. Seller Inventory # 1013F59
