Volume I from the special 1896 collector's edition produced for the Athanaeum Club, containing Pere Goriot, Modeste Mignon, and The Deserted Woman. 412 pages, with 8 enchanting illustrations (each protected with a translucent sheet of thin tissue). I-XIX [Preface] + 348 + 412 pages. CONDITION: This GOOD PLUS condition hardcover is solidly bound, retaining the gilt lettering on its chipped spine label. Cover wear is mainly on the edges, spine ends, and outer corners. The page block top-edge gilt is still bright, and the pages are in VERY GOOD condition - unmarked and uncreased. Originally issued without a dust jacket, I have nevertheless fashioned a simple new one, to further protect this antique from wear. *****NOTE: Due to this book's weight (ca. 2.5 pounds) an additional shipping amount must be assessed for international orders and domestic (USA) Priority orders, not to exceed the actual USPS rate. There is no extra charge for domestic Media Mail.
