Print on Demand. This book is a wide-ranging exploration of Addison's poems, drawing from major literary traditions and styles. It looks at two key periods of Addison's writing life, the early and middle eras, where he was a major part of the literary scene. The author considers Addison's work in light of the major contemporary issues of his day, the turmoil of the Whig and Tory political era, and the birth of the Enlightenment. The body of the work provides a solid understanding of how these major events in society and the arts shaped Addison's career. The author places Addison's poetry within the framework of other poets from the Restoration period, such as Dryden, and shows how he differed from his predecessors. A strength of the book is the connection made between the conceptual density of the poems, and the complex social and economic environment in London during the period. The book's insights are significant for anyone interested in the history of literature, as they shed light on the development of the English poetic tradition during a period of rapid change and innovation. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

Thy copy cai'ts a fairer light on all, And {till out-{hines the bright original. Now Ovid boafis th' afiantage of thy fong, And tells his fiory in the Britifh tongue; Thy charming verfe, and fair tranflations, {how How thy own laurel firl't began to grow How wild Lycaon, chang'd by angry gods, And frighted at himfelf, ran howling through the woods. O may'ft thou {till the noble talk prolong, Nor age, nor ficknefs, interrupt thy fong Then may we wondering read, how human limbs Have water'd kingdoms, and diffolv'd in fireams; Of thofe rich fruits that on the fertile mold Turn'd yellow by degrees, and ripen'd into gold I How fome in feathers, or a ragged hide, Have liv'd a fecond life, and different natures try'd. Then will thy Ovid, thus transform'd, reveal A nobler change than he himfelf can tell.
