The Works of Don Francisco de Quevedo Translated from the Spanish in Three Volumes, Illustrated, Printed for Mundell & Son, Edinburgh, 1798, three frontispieces, half green morocco leather, 8.25 x 5 , 8vo. In good condition. Beautifully bound in half leather bindings in a lovely shade of green with Kemble s family crest stamped in gilt on the front and rear boards Johannes Philippus Kemble is stamped in a circular fashion in gothic lettering. Spines are darkened/discolored with age. Head of Volume I chipped with binding exposed. Joints abraded with creasing. each volume has tender joints, particularly Volume I. The front fly of Volume I is detached with an armorial Ex-libris of Albert Rowe Merrill. On the rear of the fly are old auction tags from the library of Robert Hoe. An W.J. Colley dated Jan. 1821 has signed the second end paper John Kemble s Sale . Colley purchased this directly from Kemble s estate just before his death in 1823 on the 26th of January 1821. Marbled end papers are slightly toned edges. Text block are typically toned with light foxing. Minor offsetting from frontis . Free of known marginalia. Bindings remain intact. Please see photos. A complete set of the satirical works of Francisco de Quevedo (1580-1645). Quevedo was a Spanish nobleman, politician and writer of the Baroque era. Along with his lifelong rival, Luis de Góngora, Quevedo was one of the most prominent Spanish poets of the age. His style is characterized by what was called conceptismo. Provenance of John Philip Kemble (1757-1823) considered the most famous actor of the 18th century! Kemble performed regularly at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane and Covent Garden. He made his first acting appearance as Hamlet in 1783. He played a number of Shakespearean characters throughout his career… he was well-known for owning the most recently discovered First Folio of Shakespeare #235. #235 was discovered in a Scottish Castle in 2016 on the Isle of Bute. Kemble was an avid book collector throughout his life. Kemble retired from the stage in 1817 and lived abroad until his death in Lausanne in 1823. It seems that most of his books were sold in Switzerland in 1821. This set was later bought by Robert Hoe III (1839-1909) an American businessman and producer of printing press equipment. His collection was sold at auction during 1911 and 1912 with almost half going to the Henry E. Huntington including a Gutenberg Bible. Hoe was the first president of the Grolier Club and one of the founders of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC. Seller Inventory # RAREB1798BQRX
