First thus. Hardback, bound in green cloth with faint green titling to spine. 24.5 × 17cm, vii + 440pp, viii + 342pp. Text in Russian and French. A rare and comprehensive two-volume-in-one reprint of the definitive 1913=1914 Moscow edition of Pyotr Chaadayev's works. Edited by the renowned scholar M.O. Gershenzon, this collection is a cornerstone for understanding the "Westernizer" movement in 19th-century Russia. The volume includes Chaadayev's famous Philosophical Letters, written in French during the 1830s. These letters offered a blistering critique of Russia’s perceived isolation from world progress, famously leading Tsar Nicholas I to declare Chaadayev officially insane and placing him under house arrest. Condition: This copy is in strong readable condition, though the head of the spine has been scuffed and with a little tanning to the page edges.
