Print on Demand. This book, an autobiographical adventure, follows the journey of a young woman, Elise-Florence Marie de Vauquià res de Clugny, a.k.a. Lili, as she travels to America to find the woman who was once beloved by her late father. Coming from a family of French nobility, Lili is in possession of little more than her father's miniature portrait of the woman and a bundle of letters she wrote to him when he was a young man. Lili's journey of self-discovery takes place both at sea and on land. Leaving behind the confines of her family's expectations, she becomes 'Carmen', the beautiful and mysterious woman of the Atlantic crossing, where her charm captivates her fellow travelers. Once in America, Lili finds an unlikely friend in Mrs. Ethelbert V. Cobb, a recently widowed millionaire, whose own quest for social status mirrors the vulnerabilities of Lili's pursuit of her father's lost love. With warmth and candor, the author takes us on a journey that explores the complexities of love and family, the sacrifices made in the name of duty and honor, and the thrill of a young woman venturing into a new world to find her place in it. Ultimately, this book is an act of love, a daughter's journey to uncover the missing pieces of her father's heart and find her own in the process. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

If I can be scientific here, I'll know that all the books in my uncle's library can teach me nothing. For - oh, my papa was my dearest friend, and it's only fifteen months since he died!
