Stone is all around us, whether in its natural state in the landscape, or fashioned by machines and handcrafted into useful or artistic objects. This volume covers a wide range from huge prehistoric stone circles and menhirs, to statues, gravestones, labyrinths, as well as many other objects of interest. Natural formations such as the amazing Brimham Rocks in Yorkshire are included. The first section describes different types of stones and rock, including briefly those which have landed on planet Earth from the Moon or elsewhere from our solar system. The main chapters feature the stories and background to each, as well as local folklore where relevant, and many photos and illustrations are included. Stone is the silent narrator of our planet's history, preserving the raw, unwritten forces of nature and humanity's oldest architectural triumphs. From deep geological formations to ancient megaliths, stone bridges the gap between the earth's natural beauty and our enduring creative spirit
