Item description from seller

Five entertaining and educational volumes from The Wonder Book series, published by Ward, Lock & Company. Five volumes of the Wonder Book series published by Ward, Lock & Company. These entertaining and educational children's books were popular gifts in the twentieth century, with hundreds of illustrations and several colour plates. Comprised of mixed editions, including a first edition of The Wonder Book of the Army. These fun educational books ask and answer a huge range miscellaneous questions about how things work in the world around us, such as why does striking a match make it light? How does a letter reach you? How are roads made? What is a Volcano? With eight plates to the Wonder Book of Nature, including a folding plate, collated and complete. With eight colour plates to The Wonder Book of How It's Done, collated and complete. With eight colour plates to The Wonder Book of Why and What, collated and complete. This copy includes two colour plates of trains from another book tucked in. With seven plates to The Wonder Book of Tell Me Why, collated but lacking the plate of the Matterhorn. With eight plates to The Wonder Book of the Army, including one folding plate. The rear endpaper to The Wonder Book of Tell Me Why is torn. Prior owner's ink inscription to recto of front endpaper in The Wonder Book of Nature, 'Julian Bassington - Ward'. In the publisher's original cloth binding over hard boards. Externally, generally smart. A little rubbed to the boards and the spine with some moderate wear towards the extremities. The Wonder Book of Tell Me Why and the Wonder Book of Nature are a little more rubbed at the spine, with a small chip in the cloth to the tail of the latter volume. There is a tear in the cloth at the rear joint of the Wonder Book of Why and What. Internally, firmly bound. The pages to The Wonder book of Nature are a little age-toned, but aside from this volume, pages are bright and clean throughout. Very Good.
