Print on Demand. This book examines how the treatment of women across history reveals the true state of civilization. The author argues that societies that value women's knowledge and education display higher levels of intellectual and moral progress. Western traditions, like those of the Hebrews, Greeks, and Romans, have exhibited varying degrees of social enlightenment through their treatment of women. The author examines the writings of poets and philosophers, as well as social and religious customs, to support the idea that the elevation of women is an indicator of a civilization's overall advancement. The book's insights provide a thought-provoking perspective on the role of women in society and the potential for human progress when women are given the opportunity to fully participate. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

Hitherto, civilization has been estimated rather by the diffusion of luxury, than by the progress of truth - by those works of imagi nation, which gild history with brilliant names, -which embellish galleries with pictures and statues, and delight the fancy with gay and gorgeous visions, rather than by those sober triumphs of reason and right feeling, which ih crease the comforts of many, if their trophies render few immortal. For this reason, almost all history is a work of imagination - the events dispose themselves into striking pic tures, - the leading characters fill the fore ground; the painter becomes a partizan, - so does the spectator - our sympathies are riveted on the few - the background is in shadow, and that shadow covers the multitude.
